Route description

A walk through t'Ename Forest starts and ends in the village after which the forest was named. A visit to the village will help you better understand the forest. Turn it into a day trip that catapults you back in time a thousand years.

You start the forest walk in the village centre of Ename, at the Provincial Archaeological Museum (PAM). At the PAM, archaeological finds and historical reconstructions take you on a journey through the history of the Scheldt village of Ename. Also check out the Sint-Laurentius Church, a remnant of Ename from the 10th-century.

Before you reach the forest itself, you'll head up Zwijdries. The cobblestones on this hill are protected as monuments. Turn left at the foot of the Kattenberg and hike toward checkpoint 33. Here on the Natusdreef, you enter t'Ename Forest, a surprising piece of greenery with a staircase in the middle of it. You can enjoy beautiful views of Oudenaarde, all the way to Ghent in very clear weather! The forest has rich fauna and flora, and little bridges to cross over. Don't be alarmed if you suddenly come face to face with Black Pied cattle or a Konik horse. They help preserve the biodiversity of the forest, so they graze freely. Cattle gates keep the animals in the forest, but otherwise they are given free rein.

Node 31 - 32

VIEW OF THE SCHELDT VALLEY

The large hump in the landscape is believed to be a rabbit warren or 'warande'. The priests of the village had a hill built with burrows for the rabbits, which was also useful for hunting. Between this checkpoint 31 and 32 is a resting point where once again you can enjoy a beautiful view of Ename and the Scheldt Valley.

Hidden behind an inconspicuous facade in the village centre of Ename is a superb heritage gem. Huis Beaucarne has been occupied by the same family for more than 250 years. Both the house and the impressive garden with its grape greenhouse are reasons in themselves to visit Ename. A guided visit is available by appointment, packages such as brunch or an afternoon tea can also be booked at any time. The tearoom in the historic courtyard is open from May. The perfect end to your walk, then, with a tea, coffee and cake or aperitif with tapas.
