Cycling along De Linie

Nowhere are the State-Spanish Lines of old more tangible than on this route from the Waas border village of De Klinge. Here you can still find remnants of forts, a little further on the lines are only visible from the air, as streets, causeways and watercourses.

Starting point

Klingspoor

waasland_Klingspoor_sint-gillis-waas.jpg

Klingspoor, an interactive site on the bed of the former Mechelen-Terneuzen railway line, is where you can discover various heritage themes in an active way. You follow in the footsteps of smugglers who were very active in this border area, delve into the history of the Waas clog-making industry, and discover a piece of the 'death thread' from the First World War.

Café (Ou)de Statie

The perfect place to settle down for a bite and/or a beer before or after your ride, is this fully renovated cafe on the Klingspoor site. There's a lovely terrace in good weather!

STROPERS FOREST

Stropersbos.jpg

Via the old railway bed, you'll head towards checkpoint 80, surrounded by greenery. Along the way, you can take a quick right turn into the Stropers Forest, one of the largest forest complexes in East Flanders. Here, Galloway cattle, Konik horses and sheep have been introduced by the forest rangers: these peaceful grazers help avoid forestation of the open landscape and thereby protect the varied natural beauty.

STATE-SPANISH LINES

Badmarlinie_johanMartens.jpg

De Linie runs through the Stropers Forest: these days it is the drainage stream for the forest, built between 1701-1702 by Marquis Bedmar to protect the Spanish Netherlands from the Dutch Republic. Like the Forts Bedmar and Fuentes-Spinola between checkpoints 73 and 10, Fort Sint-Jan was also integrated into this huge defensive line from Nieuwpoort on the coast to Huy on the Meuse. The fort has since disappeared, but the shape on the ground and the moats remain clearly visible. Remains of canon cellars were found during excavation work between the two world wars. According to a Waas folk tale, a treasure still lies hidden in the subterranean passages.

Node 73-10

Koningsdijk

Via the cycling path on the Koningdijk, you'll ride from the Spaans Kwartier district and Fort Bedmar toward Kieldrecht. This attractive dike, with its planted poplars, lies right on the Belgium-Netherlands border and was built following the Peace of Münster, which ended the Eighty Years' War in 1648. A few hundred meters past the intersection with the Polderstraat, you'll notice on your right a rectangular strip of land with a large pond, a flagpole and a farmhouse. This was where Fort Spinola stood, a Spanish fort overlooking the polders between De Klinge and Hulst. Nothing remains of the fort, but an information board on the bike path provides more information about it.

Node 12-67

De Grote Geule

kreken van Saleghem header website.jpg

You'll find delicious lunch menus and monthly menus in De Grote Geule, on the market square in Kieldrecht, near the nature reserve and creek of the same name. Head up to the dike for one of the best views along this route.

Node 67

Drijdijck

waasland_Drijdijck_sint-gillis-waas.jpg

A little south of Kieldrecht, you'll come to the Drijdijk and get a view of the Waaslandhaven. Drijdijck, the nature reserve in the middle, is a feast for the eyes, with grazing wild horses and, with a bit of luck, tufted ducks, lapwings, mute swans and marsh harriers. The contrast with the greenery underneath your feet and the industry rising above it makes this place very photogenic. The business you can see is Antwerp Euroterminal, the market leader in overseas transport of rolling cargo. Other large companies in the area include Tabaknatie and ITC Rubis. The new Kieldrecht lock brings sea-going vessels to their unloading docks via a shorter route.

Node 70-75

Kreken van Saleghem

Natuurhuis Panneweel.jpg

This creek area, stretching across Sint-Gillis-Waas, Meerdonk and Vrasene, forms a winding string of small and large lakes, reed beds, willow groves and swamps, often with their own names. The view at checkpoint 75 of the Oude Saleghem channel and the fishermen's cottages is breathtaking! Further along the Krekeldijk is Nature House Panneweel, an old farmyard from where Natuurpunt Waasland Noord organises guided walks along the creeks. A pleasant picnic spot!
