Along the creeks of Assenede hiking route

On this route, you'll walk along the creeks of Assenede on the border with the Netherlands. Here, you'll discover a piece of Scandinavia in your own country with large pools of water, wooden hiking piers and endless vistas without a brick house in sight.

Starting point

Assenede Market

The polder municipality of Assenede is one of the oldest municipalities in Flanders, with historical records dating back to the 10th century. Assenede managed to preserve the old alleys in its centre well, and in recent years, numerous church ways have also been restored to their former glory.

Node 54-72

Creeks

From node 54, Doornendijkstraat is your guide to the Great and Red Gullies, two of the most beautiful creeks in Meetjesland. A little further on towards node 64 are the Great and Little Kil, also known as the 'Sisters Creeks'. Rare birds of prey like the marsh harrier like to perch in the gullies.

Node 54-64

Café Passé

You can quench your thirst at Café Passé. In the large garden, you'll get a beautiful view of the creek area. Cyclists, hikers, but especially neighbours and local residents come here often and will gladly turn up.

Node 59-70

De Dijkwerker

Halfway between nodes 59 and 70 stands 'De Dijkwerker' ('The Dyke Worker'), a statue by Assen-based artist Antoine Bral. It was placed in memory of all the nameless dyke workers who worked hard here in the 15th century: to protect this region from the rushing water, they built a 25-kilometre dyke from Boekhoute to Terneuzen in 1494. The dyke was called the 'landtdijck', but is now known as the Graafjansdijk.

Node 70

De Phonograaf
