The Gust De Smet walking route
Extended route description
Walk in the footsteps of the Flemish expressionist Gustave ‘Gust’ De Smet, who lived and worked in Deurle. Together with Constant Permeke and Frits Van den Berghe, he was one of the 'big three' of Flemish Expressionism.
Starting point THE GEVAERT-MINNE MUSEUM
In the Gevaert-Minne Museum, the former home and studio of the painter Edgard Gevaert (1891-1965), you will find work from just about all of the great Latem artists, such as George Minne, Albert Servaes and Valerius de Saedeleer. The museum itself is beautifully located in a wooded setting covering 3 hectares.
Deurle
In the picturesque centre of Deurle, you can walk up the Cyriel Buysse pathway, between the orchard and the church. From 1910 onwards, this famous writer, who is known, amongst other things, for his work 'Het gezin van Paemel' (The Van Paemel family), lived in a pile dwelling on the wooded ridge of the hill.
MUSEUM GUST DE SMET
In the former home and studio of Gust De Smet (1877-1943) is the Gust de Smet Museum, which reopened in 2016 after a thorough renovation. Be sure to drop in to experience some of the masterpieces produced by the artist! In addition to the studio, the house also contains the fully furnished living room and bedroom on the first floor, while the floor above contains a selection of artworks presented by theme and by period. Cupboards and chests of drawers were set up as a mini-repository for archival documents, a personal library and utility objects. Together, they cast an interesting light on the life of De Smet.
Brasserie Vinois
This elegant, brasserie is known far and wide for its 'cuisine de grand-mère' (grandmother-style cooking), such as stewed pork cheeks en calf's kidneys. In the afternoon, you can grab a tasty lunch and in the summer, the garden is transformed into a cosy open-air restaurant.
Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens
A little bit further on is the white, modernist building of the MDD (Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens), with its beautiful collection of contemporary art from at home and abroad. In the museum's garden, temporary art projects are waiting to be discovered.
THE RODE BEUKENDREEF
Halfway along the Kasteeldreef, you can enter the Rode Beukendreef, a 1,000-metre long avenue that led to the castle grounds. In 1954, however, this was replaced and subdivided into plots for house construction, but in addition to the avenue, a double row of trees that seem to reach as high as heaven remained intact.
d'Ouwe Hoeve
This brasserie with its amazing terrace on one of the most beautiful village squares in the entire province forms the perfect ending to your walk! On your plate, you will find carefully composed brasserie dishes prepared with mostly artisanal products from local growers and breeders. But in this 'little piece of Provence in Flanders', you'll also be welcome just for a drink.
