Extended route description

Two old, elongated railway beds, transformed into cycling paths, take you past the most beautiful natural areas of the Waasland region.

Starting point

Daknam

Node 20-23

Daknam

Daknam Kerk Den Reynaert TOV.jpg

You'll start your ride in Daknam, the smallest village in the Waasland region. Here you'll find various references to the medieval story 'Of Reynaert the Fox'. Indeed, the residents of Daknam are convinced that Reynaert and his clan roamed around here. You'll also notice this in the village's cafes and restaurants that bear the names of characters from the story. Pop into café Den Reynaert, and sample the house beer 't Vosken.

Daknamse Marshes

You leave the village centre of Daknam behind you, and end up on the Spoorwegpad. This cycling and hiking trail, actually an old railway bed, takes you right through the Daknam Marshes. From the track, you have a good view of the hay fields, which are bustling with life.

Node 2-97-93

Fondatie van Boudelo

You'll ride for quite a while along the Stekene Canal - or Stekense Vaart in the local parlance. This is where you'll find the Fondatie van Boudelo, an important natural area that belonged to the Abbey of Boudelo 800 years ago. There's no trace of the abbey today, but the nature that took its place is possibly even more monumental.

Node 86-91

Steengelaag

Between Stekene and Moerbeke, you'll ride over an old railway bed again. You'll cross the Steengelaag, a diverse natural area where clay was mined in the past.

Node 94-99

Kerk en Grot O.L.V. van de Fietsers

At the intersection with the Koebrugstraat in Klein Sinaai, you'll see signs directing you to the church and grotto of Our Lady of Cyclists. Worth the small detour, as the church is unique in Belgium. A cycling museum has been set up in the side aisles, featuring more than 100 jerseys from the likes of Eddy Merckx, Fabian Cancellara, Francesco Moser, Johan Museeuw, Philippe Gilbert, and many others.

Node 99

De Oude Route

On the small detour to the church and grotto of Our Lady of Cyclists, you can take a breather at café De Oude Route. Drinks are available, or satisfy your hunger with a snack or sweet treat.

Node 19-80

De Linie

preview__MG_4140.jpg

A small tarmac road takes you to Eksaarde, where you'll ride right past the De Linie nature reserve. Here you can't help but enjoy the vast nature and silence.

Node 80-81

Den Bascuul

On the former Stationsplein in Eksaarde you will find Den Bascuul, a cozy bistro where almost all the ingredients on your plate come from organic suppliers from the surrounding area. In the afternoon, they also serve ice cream, pancakes and organic beers.
