Oudenaarde city walking route
Oudenaarde city walking route
A walk through the town of Oudenaarde past historic sites, starting at the renovated Market Square.
Starting point OUDENAARDE MARKET SQUARE
You start your walk in the bustling heart of the city. On Oudenaarde's Market Square, the town hall, a late Gothic gem from the 16th century, catches the eye straightaway. At the top of the belfry's spire, "Hanske the Warrior," a 16th-century city guard, keeps a close eye on the city.
MOU
Step into the town hall and be amazed by the MOU, Oudenaarde's city museum. You can immerse yourself in the city's rich history, including through its impressive collection of tapestries and silverware.
TOUR OF FLANDERS CENTRE
Oudenaarde can only mean one thing: the Tour of Flanders. In the Tour of Flanders Centre, you'll find an extensive visual and audio archives on the most famous race in Flanders. Those who prefer a little more action can experience first-hand what it feels like to tear across cobblestones, or go on a virtual ride up some of the Tour's hills. Don't forget to grease your calves!
BEGUINAGE
A stately green gate separates Oudenaarde's lively city centre from its beguinage. Although Oudenaarde's last beguine died in 1960, the place is still a haven of peace, serenity and contemplation.
MAAGDENDALE ABBEY
Cross the Scheldt River and continue up to the red-washed sandstone facade of Maagdendale Abbey. The complex was founded in 1233 and was one of the most important abbeys in Flanders for women. The building now serves as a city archive and art school.
De Carillon
You'll finish back on the market square. Time to sample a local delicacy: oud bruin (old brown), a typical brown beer that has been brewed in Oudenaarde since the Middle Ages. At De Carillon, you can discover their extensive beer menu on the cozy terrace.
