Ten forest walks among bluebells
'Fairy-like,' 'magical,' 'irresistible' ... these are words that one often hears come up when people see the spectacle of the flowering bluebells. Each spring, the purple carpet gently wraps up the forest in a bright blanket. More and more people are heading out each spring to witness the budding bluebells. Fortunately, there are lots of quiet spots and walking trails where you can admire the bluebells in peace.
WHAT IS A WILD HYACINTH OR BLUeBELL?
The wild hyacinth is a purple-blue spring flowering plant with a bell shape, which is why they are called bluebells. In Flemish, they are sometimes referred to as 'blauwe kousjes' (blue socks). Bluebells are mostly found in older forests with oaks and beeches. You will rarely find bluebells outside the forest. It is very fragile and prone to trampling, even when not blooming. Therefore, it is always important to always stay on the trails, not pick the flowers and always keep your dog on a leash.
WHERE DO BLUEBELLS BLOOM?
Those purple flowers are not picky. But then again, they do not grow everywhere. There are some important conditions, though, that the flowers invariably put on their wish list. Plenty of shade and a blanket of fallen leaves. They do not need much more to come into their own.
So it is no coincidence that the forest is the ideal biotope for the bluebells. This species prefers to plant itself in a blanket of leaves. And hides itself, away from excessive sunlight. So that it can feast on the rich humus and soil layers.
The most famous bluebell forest is that of Halle. Tens of thousands of tourists flock to Hallerbos every year. Fortunately, there are a great many peaceful forests with the same beautiful floral scenes. There are as many as 10 forests in the East Flanders regions where you can spot them.
WHEN CAN YOU SPOT BLUEBELLS?
When you can spot the popular spring bloomer varies every year. The flowering of these hyacinths depends hugely on the weather. The more sunshine in the spring, the earlier the flowers will show themselves. On average, the wait is until mid-April, early May.
Once they get there, they do not stay for long. Bluebells disappear again after about two weeks. So it is best not to wait too long to check them out.
ALTERNATIVES TO THE CROWDED HALLERBOS
Hallerbos has since become world-famous, at least in Belgium. In that vast forest, you can walk alongside the beautiful bluebells but, unfortunately, it tends to be extremely busy. If you go to the forest hoping to quietly enjoy the blooming flowers, you could be waiting in a long queue…
We prefer the alternative routes. For the purple glow can also be admired in its full glory in other places. We are happy to give you some golden tips, but do keep it on the down low!
BEST FOREST WALKS FOR SPOTTING BLUEBELLS
Would you like to enjoy this special purple phenomenon in the spring to the fullest and in peace? Then the following forests will surely appeal to you.
1 Brakelbos
In Brakelbos, mainly beech and holly take the lead. The leaves of those two tree species are the ideal ground cover under which bluebells grow best.
PURPLE CARPET
Another nice touch: through this forest, the Sassegembeek stream meanders its way towards The Zwalm River. This is not only extremely beautiful and picturesque, it also means there is no shortage of water. The result is the breathtaking purple spectacle that unfolds here in the spring.
For a leisurely walk, park your car easily in La Houppe, or take the train to Ronse, from where the bus will take you to the place. The Werewolf hiking trail will show you the best spots in the forest to spot bluebells.

8 Hotondbos
Three million years ago, these kinds of 'witness mounds' still lay as a kind of sandbank off the coast of the shallow and then tropical North Sea. Today, they form the biotope for a wide range of flora.
AT THE TOP OF EAST FLANDERS
Here, you will climb to the highest point in East Flanders, while enjoying the beautiful green mosaic of the Hotondbos. Bluebells get plenty of room to bloom here. Take a deep breath and enjoy the beautiful panoramas along the Op het dak van de Vlaamse Ardennen (On the Roof of the Flemish Ardennes) hiking trail. This isn't somewhere you'd come every day.
