Extended route description

The severed Scheldt meanders make Zevergem a popular spot with hikers, cyclists and nature-lovers. Old clay pits bear witness to the brick-making past.

Accessibility

This hiking route is accessible to everyone, including those who walk with a wheelchair or buggy.

Advantages:

  • At Zegergem village square, there is an adapted car park, although not coloured blue. Adapted parking spaces are also available at the rear of the church.
  • There are plenty of wide, clearly outlined footpaths with firm surfaces. There is an adapted toilet next to the cemetery entrance.

Points for consideration:

  • Here and there, you will find some potholes in the paths.
  • Sometimes, the accessible trail deviates from the route. Follow the signs with the blue icon in that event.
  • There are few rest stops along the way and a picnic table which is not accessible for wheelchairs.
Starting point

Zevergem

Zevergem is one of the oldest villages along the Scheldt: as early as the 10th century, it was written about as 'Sewaringhem', or 'dwelling place for those of the swamp'. Fitting, as the river used to regularly overflow its banks here.

Towpath

Once at the Scheldt, you walk for about 2km along the former towpath. On this path, in the past, when shipping was not yet motorised, horses as well as people pulled the barges. Along the trail were several 'inns' both where humans and animals could catch their breath.

Krommenhoek

In this 6-hectare nature reserve, yellow irises and majestic flowering rushes adorn the waterfront. It is – just like the Doornhammeke – one of the severed Scheldt meanders between Ghent and Gavere, which together form the river landscape of the Scheldemeersen.

Castle of Welden

There was already a fortification here in the Middle Ages, of which only the circular moat with rampart wall and a tower remain today. The present water castle in late Baroque style dates from the 18th century. Visiting is not possible, but it does make for a pretty picture.
