Extended route description

From the provincial domain Het Leen, you cycle towards the Schipdonk Canal and on to the Lieve, the oldest canal in Flanders, with a detour along the Lembeekse bossen.

Accessibility

This route is accessible to all, including those riding adapted bicycles.

Advantages:

  • The roads on this route are wide and practically all of them are paved.
  • Adapted parking spaces are available.
  • There are public sanitary facilities available.
  • Since 15 August 2022, there is a borrowing point for adapted bicycles at the Het Leen domain.

Points for consideration:

  • You cross a busy lane once.
  • There is a small cobblestone section and a narrowed road section. Nothing insurmountable, provided you get/find the right help for a while. The people you meet along the way will naturally be eager to help. Do not hesitate to speak to them.

This former military terrain has been reclaimed by nature and now forms a deciduous forest that extends over 260 hectares. You can spend hours here hiking, biking and exploring along the numerous paved footpaths winding through the forest. At the forest information centre, the staff will be happy to help you with all your questions about forests, trees and wood, and the arboretum is internationally known for its magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and viburnums. The total collection contains more than 7,000 species and varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials. Definitely recommended during the flowering period!

SCHIPDONK CANAL

Schipdonkkanaal Eeklo TOV.jpg

The Schipdonk Canal – known locally as 'The Stinker' – was dug in the 19th century to drain the highly polluted waters of the Lys, hence its nickname. Fortunately, fish have returned to the area and the canal no longer emits any foul odours.

BEIRTJESBRUG

This romantic spot on the Lieve is especially popular with fishermen. The name refers to the Ghent 'bear' that was brought in by ship to fertilise the land. Reportedly, the bear was 'sampled' or checked for quality here.

the LIEVE canal

De Lieve David Samyn.jpg

The Lieve, the oldest canal in Flanders, assured Ghent centuries ago of a fast shipping connection with the Zwin. Today, the 'Liefken' flows through the landscape like a picturesque canal.

The Lembeekse Bossen are spread over the territory of Lembeke, Waarschoot, Sleidinge and Oosteeklo. The Bardelaeremuseum on the outskirts tells the story of the old Meetjesland. Nearby is the Heihoek, a tourist hit thanks to its numerous restaurants. In the Kwadenbos, a beautiful piece of forest in the Lievegem section of the Lembeekse Bossen, lies one of the most beautiful areas of countryside in the entire forest area.
