Levend Erfgoedpark hiking route
Levend Erfgoedpark Hiking Route
No lions, giraffes or elephants in the 22-hectare animal park of Puyenbroeck Provincial Domain, but farm animals like our (great) grandparents would remember. A fun place to explore with the whole family along this accessible hiking circuit!
Starting point Puyenbroeck Provincial Domain
Everyone in the Waasland region, and by extension East Flanders, knows the Puyenbroeck Provincial Domain. Since its opening in 1969, it has been a popular destination for summer family outings. For the children, there is a playground, a play forest, a traffic park with go-carts and a pond with rowing boats and pedal boats.
You can hike in the 150-hectare forest area and in the Living Heritage Park. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the Olympic Swimming Pool or the numerous sports grounds, including a recently built golf course. At the provincial heritage site Mola Mill Centre on the edge of the park, you can find out all about mills and wind energy.
Those who prefer not to hop from one attraction to another can get around by rental bike or by the tourist train that traverses the park. Tackle hunger and thirst at The New Four Seasons, a cafeteria with buffet and a large waterfront terrace, or at brasserie De Laatste Afslag, the golf course's clubhouse. At the Sports Bar, you can enjoy a drink or small meal every day. Rest up on the sunny terrace or get behind the table at the totally renovated cafeteria.
Node 9 Watchtower
Since the summer of 2020, a new watchtower has jutted out over the Levend Erfgoedpark. A steel fire escape climbs 15 metres high to a platform above the winding pond, which offers panoramic views of the popular recreation area. It also got a real landscape park, with an experience park, suspension bridge, barefoot path and grazing animals. The tower is on the Putjeshoekdam near node 9 of the Moervaartvallei hiking network.
Nodes 9-8-12-10 Levend Erfgoedpark
Anyone who hears 'erfgoed' ('heritage') will automatically think of old buildings or crafts from our (great) grandparents. At the Living Heritage Park in Puyenbroeck, things are different. There, the heritage blows and cackles, gives birth to little ones and provides milk.
In this special piece of the Provincial Domain – kind of like Bokrijk, but with animals – regional farm animals whose existence is threatened were given a new permanent home. No bears or tigers here, but there are some stone rabbits, Ardennes fox heads and numerous other poultry animals in the most colourful varieties. This unique park is freely accessible to all.
