Extended route description

Two unique natural areas for the price of one. This walking route takes you from De Gavers all the way to the Nuchten. Prefer a smaller circuit? You can easily split this route into 2 smaller circuits, each in and around a beautiful natural area.

Starting Point

De Gavers Geraardsbergen

Provinciaal domein De Gavers 2 David Samyn.jpg
Strand De Gavers in Geraardsbergen

This 20-hectare domain at the foot of the Oudenberg offers a wide range recreational activities. The lake, surrounding forest and accessible hiking and biking trails allow you to completely unwind in this green setting. Prefer something a little more active? You can also bike, hike, sunbathe and even take a dip in the water here. Water lovers can get their fill at the lake, with water activities such as pedalo, canoeing, surfing, kayaking and so much more.

If you prefer to stay dry, you can opt for a game of miniature golf, archery or go up the climbing tower. Thanks to the varied, unique offering in this recreational domain, many people want to stay here for more than just a day. That's possible, because De Gavers also offers various options for overnight stays, from hiker's huts, a four-star campsite, a youth hostel to comfortable bungalows.

Node 94 – 96

Along the Dender

DenderIdegem.jpg

From node 94, the Dender keeps you company. After a good kilometre, you cross the Dender at checkpoint 96 to arrive in Idegem. Unique to Idegem, the village is the only place on the Dender that still operates a ferry. The ferryman pulls the ferry back and forth via two tensioned steel cables, which then sink back to the bottom of the Dender after he passes, to allow boats to pass.

The ferry used to be used to transport cattle. These days, it’s primarily a fun attraction for cyclists and hikers on Sundays and holidays from May to September. Just a stone's throw away, you can satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst on the terrace of Eetkaffee Break@4. Via the Idegem square, you'll go past the Sint-Pietersbanden Church and the town hall.

Node 96 – 98

De Nuchten

When you leave the village centre of Idegem, you end up in de Nuchten. This street takes you up to the nature reserve of the same name a little further on.

The area was created by a meandering river that became land over the years. You can discover a large part of this unique natural area via the boardwalk. This specially constructed walking trail on the wooden planks lets you discover the landscape in a unique way. You literally hover above and among the flowery grasslands.

Node 98

Zandbergen

Via the Dender Bridge, you'll arrive in Zandbergen. If you want, you can take a detour here and take a look at the village centre. A few must-sees in Zandbergen: the Church of Our Lady with its west-facing tower and the Water Castle de Lalaing.

Node 98– 94

The Dender

From node 98 you are once again alongside the Dender. In need of a little breather? Then head into the village of Grimminge at node 97. There, opposite the Church of Our Lady, you can enjoy a nice meal at Restaurant Suskewiet.

Node 3 – 1

Restaurant Restoga

Just before the finish line, enjoy the peace and natural beauty at the Provincial Domain De Gavers. You can make a pit stop at restaurant Restoga before heading home.
